The Montana State Elks Association (MSEA) provides financial aid to rural community hospitals in Montana to purchase equipment to aid patient care. MSEA has identified 47 smaller hospitals that are eligible for MSEA support. These community hospitals are located in remote, rural towns that have limited resources. Many of these smaller hospitals cannot provide operating room services and the majority have one or two practitioners who take calls from home to cover emergency patients.
Over the past twenty or so years, the MSEA State Project has donated approximately $950,000 to this program. This year at the MSEA Midwinter meeting held January 15-17, 2009 in Shelby, the State Project awarded $28,142 to 10 of the 21 rural hospitals that applied for support. These hospitals, item requested, and the amount of the award are given below:
- Big Sandy Medical Center, Big Sandy; Bariatric Wheelchair; $600
- Liberty County Hospital, Chester; Barrier Free Power Exam Table; $4,054
