Samuelson Siblings Got Skills
If you’re on the basketball court with the Samuelson girls, watch out: These girls are double the trouble. The sisters from Brea, Cal., are two exceptional athletes with impeccable free-throw percentages. Last year, Bonnie took first place in the 10-11 year-old girls division at the Hoop Shoot Free Throw National Finals. This year, she’ll return to the finals with her little sister Karlie at her side. Their mom, Karen, provides some insight into a sibling rivalry that’s nothing but net.
1. What was it like for Bonnie to win the Hoop Shoot National Finals last year?
Bonnie was extremely excited about winning. She was ill leading up to the competition and we were not sure whether she would be able to go. She did not touch a basketball in the days leading up to the Finals but she knew from her prior experience, that it was definitely worth the trip even if she wasn't feeling 100 percent.
2. How did Bonnie prepare for this year’s contest?
Bonnie has practiced free throws since she started entering the Hoop Shoot when she was eight and made it to nationals in 2002. It has made her realize that through practicing everyday, her free throws improve tremendously. During games, she rarely misses one shot and the team always relies on her in clutch situations.
3. How did the Regional Contest go?
The regional contest went well. The girls were a little nervous but not as much as at the state competition. Karlie was tenser as she had to hit 15 out of 15 to tie. She ended up winning in a shootout. Both girls were the top girl scorers and had to shoot against each other. Bonnie won and was given the DiAgelis award.
4. Do the girls practice together?
Yes, and they are very competitive. However, Karlie prefers to practice from the actual free throw line [as opposed to the closer line she’ll be shooting from during the Hoop Shoot Finals], since she is pretty much the clutch on her club team.
5. How do you think the girls benefit from participating in the Hoop Shoot?
The Hoop Shoot has taught them what practice can do, and has helped them mentally in tough game situations.
6. As a family, what are you most looking forward to about the national competition?
We are looking forward to visiting the Basketball Hall of Fame and seeing Bonnie’s name on the plaque. It’s such a great honor, and we are grateful for the opportunity the Elks have given our girls. Also, it will be nice spending family time together away from our hectic schedules, since the Elks really look after you.
7. How would you describe the girls' personalities?
Bonnie is sensitive and a perfectionist. Karlie is gentle but tenacious, and will never quit.
