Veteran’s Committee Brings Christmas to VOPA

Saturday, Dec 14th, the 2257 Veteran’s committee visited with the residents of the Veterans Outreach of Pennsylvania, more commonly known as the “Tiny House Project”.

The Veteran’s committee spent several weeks planning and coordinating the event. The event started with Paul Hadinger, who brought steak, chicken wings, grilled chicken and salad donated by Outback Steak House. Paul also donated a huge tray of shrimp, which was very well received. One resident was so excited because, as he said, “We never get shrimp. I can’t wait to dig in”.

Committee Member Chris Rineer also brought a large tray of yummy Christmas cookies including sugar cookies, chocolate chip and peanut butter.

After getting their fill of steak and shrimp, the seven of the 11 residents were encouraged to play three games, table top skee-ball, ping pong toss and bean bag toss, earning points for each effort. The highest scoring Vet got first pick from prize table, which included a blue tooth speaker, backpack, foot massager, puzzles and more. Each Vet was able to pick two prizes.

The visitation concluded with a gifts of stuffed stockings for every Vet. Each stocking included a sewing kit, puzzle book, playing cards, a keychain lanyard donated by Duty’s Lock and Key, and gift cards for Walmart and McDonalds. The sewing kit was greatly appreciated with one Vet commenting that it was just what he needed.

Special thanks you Tom Zimmerman for taking 2257 members on a tour of the facilities, Mallory Sherman, VOPA Kitchen Manager, for helping with the food, and Lisa Zimmerman for working with the committee to coordinate the event.

Special thanks to all the members who donated and/or volunteered. The group took a picture by our Lodge brick, honoring our fallen members who were veterans.
