Sebring Elks #1529 was honored to host a Christmas buffet lunch on Dec. 22nd at the Lodge for the Veterans living in the local nursing homes. Veterans from Sunny Hills, Kennilworth, Royal Care and The Palms were present. The Elks Veterans committee: Burt & Evelyn Marple, Betsy Waddell, and Lin DiCesare worked hard to make sure their guests were well fed and gave each one a gift box which was adorned by candy cane sleighs made and donated by Diane Levitt. For those veterans who could not make it to the luncheon, the committee visited the Magnolia and Highlands Village nursing homes and presented them the gift boxes.

We had a great time with a bunch of kids that liked shooting foul shots.
We will continue to hold the Hoop Shoot and hope to get more young people involved.

Pictured here are two members of the Sebring Elks #1529 Veterans Committee, Bert & Evelyn Marple. They had just received over 73 knitted skullcaps made by the Knitting Club of Buttonwood Bay. These caps have since been shipped overseas to our service men and women.

In an article written by Reverend Antonio Hernandez, titled "My Kingdom for a Crown: An Around-the-World History of the Skullcap and it's Modern Socio-Political Significance", he states that the oldest skullcaps found so far were on the "Tollund Man" and the "Iceman". Both are ancient mummies approximately 5 millennia old. "Tollund Man" was found in a Danish bog, naked except for the skullcap, and "Iceman" was found in the Swiss Alps wearing tethered clothing and a skullcap. The function of the skullcaps are protection (spiritual as well as physical), symbolism, rank, identification, education/training and commitment as in religious or socio political. Skullcaps protect the head from both heat and cold. According to Rev. Hernandez, his research shows only the Native American, Polynesians, Micronesians, Islanders, and Aborigines seem to have no skullcap traditions. The Orient and the Old World histories show the skullcap as fashionable. "Almost every nation has it's own skullcap tradition."

So, thank you ladies for not only giving our service men and women physical protection, but love and tradition!
